Tip #137: Save Fiction for Old Age

Tuesday, May 4, 2010 @ 09:05 AM

Retirement Yenta believes in keeping her mind alert and active by learning new things (See Tip #114: Go Back to School). She knows that  this will serve her well as her brain ages. Retirement Yenta also believes that fiction is fun, but should be saved for either times of complete relaxation (like sitting on Miami Beach, soaking up some rays) or for when she’s older and cannot get around as easy. So with that thought, your dear Yenta suggests that you save fiction for your golden years. This will continue to keep your mind working, but won’t add the stress of learning new things (Oy veh, Spanish is hard–see Tip #114). Retirement Yenta says: “Save fiction for old age, your mind and body will thank you.”

Tip #134: Live for Today

Friday, April 23, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

Retirement Yenta knows there are only two true guarantees in life: 1. Taxes and 2. Death. We have two choices on taxes–pay ‘em or go to jail. This little Yenta dislikes the tax man, but she knows he cometh and tries to always be prepared with deduction after deduction. Now, as for the whole death thing…there’s nothing you can do but have a little fun while you are in the waiting room (aka: life). SO HAVE FUN ALREADY. Pick a vanity project and run with it, or go and do something that just makes you smile. Retirement Yenta would like to remind you of Tip #98: Share a Cab with a Stranger. This little pleasure made your dear Yenta smile for days and days. We all know that some day (hopefully long into the future) the grim reaper will arrive and to this your dear Yenta says: “Why wait to enjoy your life? You may retire to the sky before tomorrow!”

Tip #114: Go Back to School

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 @ 10:03 AM

Retirement Yenta loves to learn new things. She’s learning Spanish right now (Que está aprendiendo español en este momento). Your dear Yenta strongly suggests you go back to school and learn something new. This will keep your mind working and help ward off any signs of forgetfulness that sometimes comes with aging and not using your ol’ noggin. There are advantages of taking classes at a local college. They include: meeting new people, building a new social group, killing the curve for all the traditional college-age students, and simply, reliving memories of your first days on campus. If you don’t want to go back to a traditional school setting, you can take an online course. Many reputable schools now offer this alternative route for learning. AND, finally, if you want to save a few bucks (you KNOW how this Yenta likes a good deal), go to a local bookstore and buy a textbook on the subject you are interested in and read it. Retirement Yenta says: Self-improvement should not end upon retirement. Self-improvement should BEGIN today and continue the rest of your life.

Tip #91: Learn Local Politics

Thursday, January 14, 2010 @ 01:01 PM

What’s the most powerful political lobby in Washington, DC besides the NRA, AMA, and AIPAC?  If you guessed the AARP, you’re right. There’s a reason it is so strong – retirees are involved in politics, and you should be, too!  Oy – what else are we gonna do with all of our free time? Now your beloved Yenta is not suggesting you pack your bags for a march on Washington. She’s merely suggesting that you acquaint yourself with local politics, and maybe even volunteer at a voting station on an election day. If nothing else, you’ll have something to tawk about while sitting at the counter of your favorite diner (see Tip #90).

Tip #20 Join AARP

Sunday, October 11, 2009 @ 11:10 AM

I have been a member since I was 50 ( I am 54 ).  They put out a very nice AARP Bulletin that covers Your Health, Your Money, Your World.  Their website: bulletin.aarp.org.  When reading this publication, fantasize about the joys of retirement. You also can get discounts from various companies that cater to pre-retirees and those already retired. Retirement Yenta loves discounts!

Tip #19 Consider a Walk-in Bathtub

Sunday, October 11, 2009 @ 11:10 AM

When redesigning your home or moving to a retirement home, consider re-doing your bathroom. You may want to consider putting heavy duty  ”hold em” bars on your wall of either your bathtub or shower. When I rented my Miami Beach condo to a couple in their 70′s, that was the first thing they asked for!  Walk-in bathtubs are a great idea, too!  You don’t have to climb over the bathtub wall. These are always advertised in AARP and AAA’s Car and Travel magazines.
