Tip #158: Save Your Soles
Retirement Yenta loves a cute pair of shoes. She especially loves to have her feet in something cute, functional, and fashion forward. In Miami Beach, this little Yenta likes to go to Shoe Freak. She especially likes to go to Sigi, who knows her Miami shoes! Sigi is a masterful sales person who knows how to fit your feet. Now, while they have crazy 6 ” heels, they have great shoes that a Yenta can wear to the beach or on a night out on the town. You can find the Shoe Freak at 610 Collins Ave. in Miami Beach.
Tip #152: Learn Something New
Retirement Yenta believes that learning is a life-long process. She also believes that learning new things will keep the ol’noggin working like a well-oiled machine. This is why your dear Yenta is trying her best to learn to speak the language of Espagna! AND, as you know, dear Readers, this little Yenta likes to save a buck. So, with this in mind, Retirement Yenta would like to recommend free college classes to you. You can take classes from Yale, MIT, and other schools. Visit www.education-portal.com and click on “Open Course Ware” for a list of offerings!
Tip #148: Don’t Disconnect
Retirement Yenta occasionally misplaces her things. That happens when you are as busy as a beaver giving advice and preparing for your impending retirement. Once, your dear Yenta searched for hours and hours for her readers, only to find them atop her own head. The one thing this little Yenta cannot go without is her phone–AND, it is one of the easiest things for her to misplace. With this in mind, your dear Yenta suggests you keep a landline or another cell close by for those times when you lose your cell phone. Retirement Yenta says: Keep your land line wired for the times when you are tired and can’t find your phone. You can call yourself–like ET: Phone Home.
Tip #144: Become a Conversation Partner
Retirement Yenta is trying her best to learn Spanish. Oy veh! (¡Veh de Oy!) It’s hard to learn a language later in life! With this in mind, your dear Yenta was going to recommend you hire a conversation partner to practice speaking Spanish with. But, then she remembered how much she likes to save a buck, and she had a GREAT idea. Retirement Yenta recommends you become a conversation partner! You can trade conversation partnering with a Spanish speaking person who is learning English. This a great service to provide to someone learning your mother tongue, and you will get something out of it too. Now, keep in mind, dear Readers, you will need to choose someone who speaks the language you are trying to learn! Spanish speakers will not make good conversation partners if you are trying to learn Mandarin Chinese (unless they actually speak Mandarin)!
Tip #141: Thread Up Your Clothing
As you may well know, dear Readers, Retirement Yenta loves to save a buck. She recently returned from the tailor, where she picked up a newly mended sweater. This was one of her favorite cashmere cardigans, black with tan leather shoulder patches. When holes appeared in the elbows, your dear Yenta could not imagine parting ways with this dear cashmere. At first, she started kvetching then she remembered the tailor. Now, her dear cashmere has elbows a-patched with tan leather. This little patch job made the sweater go from gross to good-n-stylish, practically overnight. Retirement Yenta says: “If your clothing is dear, keep your tailor near, that way, you have nothing to fear!”
Tip #137: Save Fiction for Old Age
Retirement Yenta believes in keeping her mind alert and active by learning new things (See Tip #114: Go Back to School). She knows that this will serve her well as her brain ages. Retirement Yenta also believes that fiction is fun, but should be saved for either times of complete relaxation (like sitting on Miami Beach, soaking up some rays) or for when she’s older and cannot get around as easy. So with that thought, your dear Yenta suggests that you save fiction for your golden years. This will continue to keep your mind working, but won’t add the stress of learning new things (Oy veh, Spanish is hard–see Tip #114). Retirement Yenta says: “Save fiction for old age, your mind and body will thank you.”
Tip # 132: Learn to Paint
Retirement Yenta knows that you are going to have some time on your hands when you leave the workforce. She recently had a lot of time off for Passover and spent the time “practicing for her impending retirement.” During all this practice, your dear Yenta got to thinking about all the projects she would like to do in her Miami Beach home. She noticed that it was time to paint (no, we’re not talking about painting like Bob Ross and his happy trees…we’re talking about painting the walls), and instead of hiring someone to come in and do it for her, this little Yenta thought she could save a buck by doing it herself. Now, it being the Passover and all, she was just pondering…no painting was done. BUT, once she’s retired, you can bet your tuchas she’s going to be doing the work herself. ANNND, once she’s really good at it, she might even make a buck or two painting for her friends and neighbors! Retirement Yenta says: Painting projects are a proven path to passing time!
