Tip #89: Find a Casino

Monday, January 11, 2010 @ 09:01 AM

Retirement Yenta recently returned from her favorite local casino, Foxwoods (in the wilds of CT). Yes, she knows that there’s a stereotype there…old people and slot machines have a certain affinity for one another. BUT, your dear Yenta is not old, and therefore, she shuns the slots and the stereotype. Give her a good game of black jack or craps, and she’s good to go. Casinos offer large (and CHEAP) rooms, good (and CHEAP) food, shows, spas, and in Vegas, they offer sunshine, too. You know the Yenta loves a good deal. She has found that the casino can be a great getaway (and CHEAP). Your dear Yenta says: You don’t have to spend a penny in the slots, heck you don’t even have to gamble, the casino offers such a variety of things to do. Go, eat, luxuriate.

Tip #87: Join Facebook

Thursday, January 7, 2010 @ 01:01 PM

Retirement Yenta is a social butterfly. She loves to keep in touch and get caught up. She has found that the social media trend has swept her away. Your dear Yenta loves Facebook and Twitter, not to mention LinkedIn. She believes these sites are where it’s at. This Yenta has connected with friends from high school (in the wilds of CT), and found her former babysitter (NOOOOOO, not the babysitter of her children, but her own babysitter, who took care of her when she was a wee little Yenta). Once you try it, Retirement Yenta knows you will like it. All the cool Yentas do it…so should you.

Tip #61 Find a Retirement Community

Monday, November 30, 2009 @ 09:11 AM

Retirement Yenta decided ages ago to retire in Miami Beach. It makes her happy, and she will be there with her “people” (the Jews and the gays)–not that she’s gay, but she has waayyyyy too many gay friends to deny her attraction to the gay male’s decorating skill set. While your dear Yenta knows where she is retiring, you may not. If you need some guidance, check out www.55communityguide.com, a comprehensive directory of retirement communities and retirement homes of all sorts, including Active Adult Communities, 55+ Communities, and Assisted Living Facilities.

Tip #43 Lead Your Own Life

Friday, November 6, 2009 @ 11:11 AM

Retirement Yenta says: “Have separate interests and hobbies from your spouse!” If you spend all your time with your significant other, you will start to get on each other’s nerves. Couples with both shared and individual interests get along best. Your dear Yenta says “Oy, you married ‘em, you don’t want to spend ya entire life with ‘em.” One should always have a group of friends where you live and a game of Mah Jongg to keep you out of trouble.

Tip #27 Learn to Play Mah Jongg (or Bridge)

Friday, October 16, 2009 @ 03:10 PM

Mah Jongg used to be for old ladies–not so anymore.  Actually, according to the National Mah Jongg League a much younger crowd is getting interested in the game.  Retirement Yenta has been playing Mah Jongg for over five years, and she highly recommends it.  She even plays in tournaments!  You can learn very easily online or with a tutor, and you can even play against others online.  As we age, it’s important to exercise our minds.  Mah Jongg and other social games (Bridge, Canasta, Twister) are excellent ways to keep your mind active and your social skills sharp.  Don’t sit at home in front of the TV–get out there and mingle!
