Tip #134: Live for Today

Friday, April 23, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

Retirement Yenta knows there are only two true guarantees in life: 1. Taxes and 2. Death. We have two choices on taxes–pay ‘em or go to jail. This little Yenta dislikes the tax man, but she knows he cometh and tries to always be prepared with deduction after deduction. Now, as for the whole death thing…there’s nothing you can do but have a little fun while you are in the waiting room (aka: life). SO HAVE FUN ALREADY. Pick a vanity project and run with it, or go and do something that just makes you smile. Retirement Yenta would like to remind you of Tip #98: Share a Cab with a Stranger. This little pleasure made your dear Yenta smile for days and days. We all know that some day (hopefully long into the future) the grim reaper will arrive and to this your dear Yenta says: “Why wait to enjoy your life? You may retire to the sky before tomorrow!”

Tip #87: Join Facebook

Thursday, January 7, 2010 @ 01:01 PM

Retirement Yenta is a social butterfly. She loves to keep in touch and get caught up. She has found that the social media trend has swept her away. Your dear Yenta loves Facebook and Twitter, not to mention LinkedIn. She believes these sites are where it’s at. This Yenta has connected with friends from high school (in the wilds of CT), and found her former babysitter (NOOOOOO, not the babysitter of her children, but her own babysitter, who took care of her when she was a wee little Yenta). Once you try it, Retirement Yenta knows you will like it. All the cool Yentas do it…so should you.

Tip #82: Get Cookin’ with Someone You Love

Tuesday, December 29, 2009 @ 11:12 AM

Retirement Yenta loves getting steamy with her hubby. Yep, you heard her. STEAMY. Cooking is a great activity that you can share with your spouse. Since you have to spend time with ‘em, why not enjoy it! Your dear Yenta suggests you look in to taking a cooking class with your spouse/partner/”special friend.” It’s a good way to share time together. If you are not into cooking, there are many other classes you could enjoy together. OR, if you can’t choose one hobby, look into something like Chef Mark and Chris Marquardt’s Brooklyn Cookin’ workshop. It is a combo workshop for cooks and photographers. One partner cooks, one partner takes photographs of the food, everyone eats. YUM.

Tip #60 Give Gelt

Sunday, November 29, 2009 @ 09:11 AM

With the holiday season fast approaching, Retirement Yenta has turned her mind to giving. The gift of gelt (money) is always appreciated. The time you save in wrapping, you can spend on your beloved balcony overlooking the ocean. Besides, now that you are about to retire, you may have a grandkid or two around (or on the way) and we all know it is an unwritten rule that Bubby will give you some gelt.

Tip #43 Lead Your Own Life

Friday, November 6, 2009 @ 11:11 AM

Retirement Yenta says: “Have separate interests and hobbies from your spouse!” If you spend all your time with your significant other, you will start to get on each other’s nerves. Couples with both shared and individual interests get along best. Your dear Yenta says “Oy, you married ‘em, you don’t want to spend ya entire life with ‘em.” One should always have a group of friends where you live and a game of Mah Jongg to keep you out of trouble.

Tip #27 Learn to Play Mah Jongg (or Bridge)

Friday, October 16, 2009 @ 03:10 PM

Mah Jongg used to be for old ladies–not so anymore.  Actually, according to the National Mah Jongg League a much younger crowd is getting interested in the game.  Retirement Yenta has been playing Mah Jongg for over five years, and she highly recommends it.  She even plays in tournaments!  You can learn very easily online or with a tutor, and you can even play against others online.  As we age, it’s important to exercise our minds.  Mah Jongg and other social games (Bridge, Canasta, Twister) are excellent ways to keep your mind active and your social skills sharp.  Don’t sit at home in front of the TV–get out there and mingle!
