Tip #148: Don’t Disconnect
Retirement Yenta occasionally misplaces her things. That happens when you are as busy as a beaver giving advice and preparing for your impending retirement. Once, your dear Yenta searched for hours and hours for her readers, only to find them atop her own head. The one thing this little Yenta cannot go without is her phone–AND, it is one of the easiest things for her to misplace. With this in mind, your dear Yenta suggests you keep a landline or another cell close by for those times when you lose your cell phone. Retirement Yenta says: Keep your land line wired for the times when you are tired and can’t find your phone. You can call yourself–like ET: Phone Home.
Tip #147: Save a Buck, Go on Vacation
Oy, Gevalt! The heat we’ve been having! Retirement Yenta loves warm weather, but the global warming we’re having can make a hot flash seem even hotter. I’m shvitzing here. This reminds your dear Yenta of a groys shmir (big deal) she thought she would pass along to you, her dear Readers. Go on vacation in June–the prices, how cheap they are. Retirement Yenta says: With the weather changing and heating up, go on vacation early and save a buck.
Tip #130: Rent Audio Books
As you may well know, Retirement Yenta loves sharing good advice. What she loves more than sharing good advice is sharing that same advice again and again. So, with that in mind, your dear Yenta would like to remind you of Tip #94: Rent Audio Books. Retirement Yenta wants to point out that renting is a great solution because you won’t clutter your bookshelves or computer with unwanted books/files. Recently, this little Yenta flew from NYC to Miami Beach and let me tell you this, missy: a good book can really help pass the time when cooped up like chickens in an overcrowded airplane. PLUS, by having the book in audio form, Retirement Yenta did not have to go digging into her bag for her reading glasses, nor did she have to worry about motion sickness from reading while flying. For your listening pleasure, Retirement Yenta recommends: Drive by Daniel Pink.
Tip #129: Have a Backup Organizer
Recently, Retirement Yenta suffered a great loss. Her dear, beloved organizer left her for a job in corporate America. [Sniff] While Retirement Yenta is very happy for her friend, she is scrambling to find her reading glasses. She knows they are here somewhere, and that they are not on the top of her head, nor the tip of her nose. Fortunately, your dear Yenta has other help keeping her life organized. This little Yenta needs all the help she can get keeping her active household in great shape. She has even found that it is nice having organizational help between visits of her main organizer. Prevention is always the key to success. Retirement Yenta says: Have a backup organizer and a backup for your backup. This way you are never left in a Lurch. (“You raaaaaaaang?”)
Tip #127: Pack a Poncho
Oy! The Rain! Yes, that’s right, Retirement Yenta arrived in Miami Beach this week during a deluge of rain. Fortunately, this wise, little Yenta packed a poncho. Retirement Yenta goes nowhere without one. She also believes that a nice neon green or bright yellow poncho is great for brightening up those dull, gray, rainy days. PLUS, it adds that needed punch of color to one’s black-and-white, mix-and-match vacation ensemble (see Tip #126). Retirement Yenta says: Pack a Poncho, it could prove prudent in a pelting downpour.
Tip #118: Watch Hoarders, Get Disgusted
Retirement Yenta, in her effort to “Out Martha Martha” and become more zen, has been cleaning out her closets and getting rid of tchotchkes that are not important to her life. Sometimes a little tchotchke can have a bit of sentimental value, and OY is it tough to toss it! Yet, it takes up unnecessary space. Well, this brilliant Yenta has the answer: Watch Hoarders on A&E. Recently, your dear Yenta was having trouble with a cleaning spree and happened upon an episode of Hoarders. Well, that was all this Yenta needed. Bags and bags of unneeded tchotchkes are now off to Goodwill, Housing Works, and off to the dump.
Tip #103: Buy a Massage Table and Oils for All Your Homes!
All the time Retirement Yenta spends at her computer sharing her brilliant retirement tips has started to bother her back and shoulders and she has found that a good massage is the cure for what ails her. Your dear Yenta has found that it is wise to have a massage therapist close by all of her homes, so she can avail herself of the healing touch when the need arises. She also knows that having all the proper supplies (oils, lotions, and massage table) makes it that much more convenient to get her massage on.
Tip #102: Go Shopping in Your Closet!
As we all know, Retirement Yenta loves a good deal. One of the best deals to be found anywhere is in the back of your closet. Yes, that’s right…YOUR CLOSET. No, that’s not a hip, trendy, new boutique. It’s that space in your apartment where you store all those clothes you wear. Your dear Yenta strongly suggests that you go digging in your closet and pull out all those clothes you haven’t worn in a while. Try them all on. Then, choose what you want to purchase (it’s free!) and donate those other schmatas to a good cause. Don’t forget to try on all those shoes in the bottom of the closet. It’s amazing what you will find that you have forgotten. Your dear Yenta says: “Since it has been a while since you have had it on, it will feel like new to you and all your friends will think so too!”
