Tip #158: Save Your Soles

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 @ 12:08 PM

Retirement Yenta loves a cute pair of shoes. She especially loves to have her feet in something cute, functional, and fashion forward. In Miami Beach, this little Yenta likes to go to Shoe Freak. She especially likes to go to Sigi, who knows her Miami shoes! Sigi is a masterful sales person who knows how to fit your feet. Now, while they have crazy 6 ” heels, they have great shoes that a Yenta can wear to the beach or on a night out on the town. You can find the Shoe Freak at 610 Collins Ave. in Miami Beach.

Tip #141: Thread Up Your Clothing

Monday, May 24, 2010 @ 03:05 PM

As you may well know, dear Readers, Retirement Yenta loves to save a buck. She recently returned from the tailor, where she picked up a newly mended sweater. This was one of her favorite cashmere cardigans, black with tan leather shoulder patches. When holes appeared in the elbows, your dear Yenta could not imagine parting ways with this dear cashmere. At first, she started kvetching then she remembered the tailor. Now, her dear cashmere has elbows a-patched with tan leather. This little patch job made the sweater go from gross to good-n-stylish, practically overnight. Retirement Yenta says: “If your clothing is dear, keep your tailor near, that way, you have nothing to fear!”

Tip #134: Live for Today

Friday, April 23, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

Retirement Yenta knows there are only two true guarantees in life: 1. Taxes and 2. Death. We have two choices on taxes–pay ‘em or go to jail. This little Yenta dislikes the tax man, but she knows he cometh and tries to always be prepared with deduction after deduction. Now, as for the whole death thing…there’s nothing you can do but have a little fun while you are in the waiting room (aka: life). SO HAVE FUN ALREADY. Pick a vanity project and run with it, or go and do something that just makes you smile. Retirement Yenta would like to remind you of Tip #98: Share a Cab with a Stranger. This little pleasure made your dear Yenta smile for days and days. We all know that some day (hopefully long into the future) the grim reaper will arrive and to this your dear Yenta says: “Why wait to enjoy your life? You may retire to the sky before tomorrow!”

Tip #127: Pack a Poncho

Monday, April 5, 2010 @ 01:04 PM

Oy! The Rain! Yes, that’s right, Retirement Yenta arrived in Miami Beach this week during a deluge of rain. Fortunately, this wise, little Yenta packed a poncho. Retirement Yenta goes nowhere without one. She also believes that a nice neon green or bright yellow poncho is great for brightening up those dull, gray, rainy days. PLUS, it adds that needed punch of color to one’s black-and-white, mix-and-match vacation ensemble (see Tip #126). Retirement Yenta says: Pack a Poncho, it could prove prudent in a pelting downpour.

Tip #126: Stick To Black & White

Friday, April 2, 2010 @ 12:04 PM

Retirement Yenta, upon her arrival at her Miami Beach Oasis, realized something big. The clothes she has there are of two colors: black and white. Your dear Yenta realized how great it was to be able to mix and match her ensembles without much thought. This makes Retirement Yenta smile. Simplicity in life is a good thing. These black and white ensembles are humidity friendly, light weight, and can easily go from beach to shul in a snap, with the addition of the right coverup. Now, your dear Yenta realizes that one might look a bit drab with no color, so she recommends adding a splash of color with a nice lightweight scarf. It’s good for the wind, or those days that have the slightest of chills blowing in from the ocean. Retirement Yenta says: What’s black and white and red aaaaaallll over? The answer is: Retirement Yenta in her black and white ensemble with a nice red scarf (and a bit of a burn from too much sun).

Tip #123: Enjoy Your Midlife Crises

Thursday, March 25, 2010 @ 12:03 PM

When one gets to that certain point in one’s career, or that certain age in life where one’s eventual “Retirement in the Sky” seems much closer than is comfortable to think about, one often experiences one’s midlife crisis. Retirement Yenta has seen it time and time again. Co-workers and friends, who were once upstanding members of the work force or upstanding members of the community, suddenly change their thinking, drop everything they once held dear and buy a sports car/motorcycle/”younger model mate.” Now, your dear Yenta does not support the latter (you know, the younger model mate, unless said current mate has already retired to the sky), she does support, however, enjoying one’s midlife crisis. This little Yenta notes one thing about everyone in their midlife crisis: they are having fun. Who cares if you are 55 and look a fool to the neighborhood. It’s your life, have fun. Don’t deprive yourself. Retirement Yenta says this: When you are a “mid-yid,” don’t flip your lid. Have some fun instid!

Tip #113: Buy Red in February

Monday, March 1, 2010 @ 02:03 PM

As the month of February winds down, Retirement Yenta has realized something. She likes red. Red is a very sexy color on this little Yenta, and Retirement Yenta likes lookin’ sexy. Red is also the color of Valentine’s Day AND National Heart Health Awareness Month (February). So, your dear Yenta says: Buy Red; See Red; Look Sexy; it’s the color of the month in February!

Ok, Ok! OY, Retirement Yenta was late getting this post out, but red is a good color any time of year. Retirement Yenta says: “Buy some reeeeeeeed, you’ll look good in it!”

Tip #110: Stock Up on Nice Pens

Monday, February 22, 2010 @ 10:02 AM

Retirement Yenta believes in luxury. Luxurious things makes a Yenta feel good when she is using them. It is a much more pleasant feeling to sign a check with a nice pen, than one of those cheap give-away pens you find at your local bank. Your dear Yenta suggests you stock up now ( as people start to text more), especially if you find your favorite pen on sale. This will ensure you have your favorite things around you when you are living on a fixed income. Retirement Yenta says: Buy Now, Save for Later!

Tip #102: Go Shopping in Your Closet!

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 @ 11:02 AM

As we all know, Retirement Yenta loves a good deal. One of the best deals to be found anywhere is in the back of your closet. Yes, that’s right…YOUR CLOSET. No, that’s not a hip, trendy, new boutique. It’s that space in your apartment where you store all those clothes you wear. Your dear Yenta strongly suggests that you go digging in your closet and pull out all those clothes you haven’t worn in a while. Try them all on. Then, choose what you want to purchase (it’s free!) and donate those other schmatas to a good cause. Don’t forget to try on all those shoes in the bottom of the closet. It’s amazing what you will find that you have forgotten. Your dear Yenta says: “Since it has been a while since you have had it on, it will feel like new to you and all your friends will think so too!”

Tip #44 Restore Your Fine Leather Goods

Monday, November 9, 2009 @ 08:11 AM

Retirement Yenta recently took one of her Prada handbags (of over 15 years) to be fixed at an amazing NYC leather goods company, Modern Leather Goods Co.  Their craftsmanship is beyond reproach and their service is A-1.  Don’t be quick to throw out your used fine leather goods ( including luggage).  They often can be restored for just a fraction of the cost of the original piece.
