Tip #155: Try on the Shoes of a Simple Life

Thursday, July 29, 2010 @ 03:07 PM

Retirement Yenta loves her shoes–maybe not as much as Carrie Bradshaw, but she does love a good pair of Sperry Top-siders. But, my dear Readers, it is not shoes for your feet that your dear Yenta is discussing today. Retirement Yenta is speaking to you about the shoes for your soul (not soles). As this little Yenta sits on her balcony in Miami Beach, during a day or two of vacation, she is enjoying the sun rise, and is realizing how simple a retired life could really be. She also is realizing how much she loves the hustle and bustle of busting her tuchas for her clients. Leaving the workforce is going to be difficult and this little Yenta needs to practice for it (that’s what vacations are for, right?)…but, she knows when the time comes, that comfy pair of Top-siders will look good sitting in the sand beside her feet.

Tip #111: Steal Your Masseuse’s Sneakers

Tuesday, February 23, 2010 @ 08:02 AM

Retirement Yenta knows that keeping your feet healthy is a good thing. “Ya don’t wanna have bad feet when you’re old, it’ll make ya miserable.” This was the advice this little Yenta received in her younger days, while living in one of her first NYC walk-up apartments. The elderly neighbor who gave the advice lived on the 4th floor of the walk up. She was in her 80′s and full of moxy. Your dear Yenta watched as she slooooooowly climbed those stairs and swore she would always take care of her feet. Retirement Yenta also knows a little secret: a masseuse knows the best shoes for your feet. SOOOOOO, during a recent massage, this little Yenta was staring at the floor through the massage table doughnut and saw some GREAT shoes on her masseuse’s feet. They were the Nike Lunar Glide Plus. Retirement Yenta knew she had to have them, and so, she ran out and bought a pair for each of her homes. No, she did not STEAL them. That was a little white lie to get you to read her tip. BUT, they ARE the most comfy sneakers she has EVER had on her tootsies. Retirement Yenta says: “Take care of your feet, and you will never lose your seat.”

Tip #91: Learn Local Politics

Thursday, January 14, 2010 @ 01:01 PM

What’s the most powerful political lobby in Washington, DC besides the NRA, AMA, and AIPAC?  If you guessed the AARP, you’re right. There’s a reason it is so strong – retirees are involved in politics, and you should be, too!  Oy – what else are we gonna do with all of our free time? Now your beloved Yenta is not suggesting you pack your bags for a march on Washington. She’s merely suggesting that you acquaint yourself with local politics, and maybe even volunteer at a voting station on an election day. If nothing else, you’ll have something to tawk about while sitting at the counter of your favorite diner (see Tip #90).

Tip #61 Find a Retirement Community

Monday, November 30, 2009 @ 09:11 AM

Retirement Yenta decided ages ago to retire in Miami Beach. It makes her happy, and she will be there with her “people” (the Jews and the gays)–not that she’s gay, but she has waayyyyy too many gay friends to deny her attraction to the gay male’s decorating skill set. While your dear Yenta knows where she is retiring, you may not. If you need some guidance, check out www.55communityguide.com, a comprehensive directory of retirement communities and retirement homes of all sorts, including Active Adult Communities, 55+ Communities, and Assisted Living Facilities.

Tip #50 Draft a Will

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 @ 10:11 AM

Retirement Yenta asks, “Why haven’t you done this already???!?!?”  Your dear Yenta wants to remind you of the importance of planning for your final “retirement in the sky.”  Estate planning is the last thing you are probably thinking about at the moment, but it’s better to “panic early and avoid the rush.”  The last thing you want to put your family through is probate court, as everyone will fight over your Mah Jongg set.

Retirement Yenta has three homes. She tries to spend as much time as possible at each. Heaven forbid something go wrong with her health when she is away from her primary residence (NYC). For this reason, your dear Yenta has lined up primary care physicians in each of her communities and made sure they are all informed of her base line numbers (i.e., cholesterol count, blood pressure, hormone levels, all those numbers you never wanted to know, but have to know now.)  Retirement Yenta has also researched local hospitals. It is important that you know reputations and speciality areas of your local healthcare centers.

Tip 5: Buy a Second Home

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 @ 04:09 PM

If you do not already have a second home, buy one now, while you are still working. You will feel like you don’t have the cash to do this later on. Also, consider organizing and decorating your homes similarly so you don’t have to go through the decoration process again.
