Tip #161: Re-educate Yourself

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 @ 03:08 PM

Retirement Yenta loves a good party! AND, because Retirement Yenta loves a good party, she has forgotten a few things over the course of her years. With this in mind, your dear Yenta wants to suggests that you RE-educate yourself. Read your kid’s required text books, especially those of works of great literature! Not only does it give your noggin a workout, it will give you something for you to discuss with your kids (besides how they shouldn’t party so much). If your kids are grown, never fear, you can read along with your grand kids. If there are no grand kids in sight, get a neighbor’s kid to give your their reading list. OR, simply take a class all your own. Retirement Yenta says: RE-educate yourself. Maybe this time some of it will stick!

Tip #155: Try on the Shoes of a Simple Life

Thursday, July 29, 2010 @ 03:07 PM

Retirement Yenta loves her shoes–maybe not as much as Carrie Bradshaw, but she does love a good pair of Sperry Top-siders. But, my dear Readers, it is not shoes for your feet that your dear Yenta is discussing today. Retirement Yenta is speaking to you about the shoes for your soul (not soles). As this little Yenta sits on her balcony in Miami Beach, during a day or two of vacation, she is enjoying the sun rise, and is realizing how simple a retired life could really be. She also is realizing how much she loves the hustle and bustle of busting her tuchas for her clients. Leaving the workforce is going to be difficult and this little Yenta needs to practice for it (that’s what vacations are for, right?)…but, she knows when the time comes, that comfy pair of Top-siders will look good sitting in the sand beside her feet.

Tip #146: Take Time and Smell the Coffee

Thursday, June 17, 2010 @ 11:06 AM

Retirement Yenta recently learned of a study showing that people who smell coffee (beans and brewed) actually show more signs of alertness and have better concentration than those who don’t. With this in mind, your dear Yenta recommends you stop smelling the roses and start smelling the coffee. This Yenta likes to take trips down to Christopher Street in NYC to visit McNulty’s Tea & Coffee Co. it’s a great place to grabba cuppa cawfee or pick up a bag o’beans. Retirement Yenta says: Wake up and smell the cawfee already–it’ll do you good.

Tip #136: Hire a Tutor

Wednesday, April 28, 2010 @ 04:04 PM

Learning. Retirement Yenta loves to learn. Whether it’s about the Torah or about a’fixin motor cars, this little Yenta loves to know all about it. Now, let’s be honest here, your dear Yenta loves to read, but what she loves even more is to hire someone to help her out with those difficult subjects that she knows little about (i.e., motor cars). Recently, your dear Yenta decided to take up Organic Chemistry. Why, you ask? Because her beloved son is into it. So, now when her son’s tutor shows up to work on Orgo, this little Yenta sits on the other side of the door and listens in (you know how your dear Yenta loves to save a buck–this is a twofer the price of one!) Retirement Yenta says: “Hire a tutor, learning keeps the brain working, fresh, young and alive! Do it now, so your brian doesn’t take an unwanted dive!”

As you, my dear readers know, Retirement Yenta loves to celebrate. Celebrating is fun, and your dear Yenta KNOWS how to have fun. Coming off of the Passover and heading quickly toward the fall High Ho’s, Retirement Yenta believes that it is HIGH TIME you start planning your celebrations. One mustn’t be ill prepared for a good Jewish holiday. Stock up on non-Mevushal wines and make amends (there’s a reason your mother drilled the Jewish guilt into your head)…and prepare to eat, and drink, and have a good time. If you are not Jewish…celebrate a Jewish holiday anyway. Retirement Yenta loves a good Christmas party, even though she’s not Christian. Retirement Yenta says: “a Greek Orthodox party is not to be missed! Those people know how to break a plate!”

Tip #134: Live for Today

Friday, April 23, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

Retirement Yenta knows there are only two true guarantees in life: 1. Taxes and 2. Death. We have two choices on taxes–pay ‘em or go to jail. This little Yenta dislikes the tax man, but she knows he cometh and tries to always be prepared with deduction after deduction. Now, as for the whole death thing…there’s nothing you can do but have a little fun while you are in the waiting room (aka: life). SO HAVE FUN ALREADY. Pick a vanity project and run with it, or go and do something that just makes you smile. Retirement Yenta would like to remind you of Tip #98: Share a Cab with a Stranger. This little pleasure made your dear Yenta smile for days and days. We all know that some day (hopefully long into the future) the grim reaper will arrive and to this your dear Yenta says: “Why wait to enjoy your life? You may retire to the sky before tomorrow!”

Tip #128: Take a Day Off!

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 @ 12:04 PM

Retirement Yenta believes in practicing for your impending retirement. So, with this in mind, your dear Yenta wants to recommend that you take a day off. Relax, put your feet up, read a good book and/or the newspaper (the paper kind, not the electronic versions). Enjoy a leisurely cuppa cawfee in the morning, sleep in, and envision your life as you want it to be in your retirement years. Retirement Yenta says: Practice makes perfect, so get on it now, so your retirement can be exactly what you want.

Tip #125: Don’t Work For Free

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 @ 12:03 PM

Retirement Yenta will not work for free, though money is not always her form of payment. Your dear Yenta firmly believes that sometimes it is good to work for no money, especially when doing good for others. It’s simply good karma. She also knows that if she is not getting ANYTHING out of the gig, though, it’s not worth it. She finds that if you are getting “jazzed” by the particular type of work, you will do a better job. You will also be motivated to go that extra mile. Retirement Yenta says: “Do good for your fellow citizens and volunteer, but ony if you find joy in the project.”

Tip #123: Enjoy Your Midlife Crises

Thursday, March 25, 2010 @ 12:03 PM

When one gets to that certain point in one’s career, or that certain age in life where one’s eventual “Retirement in the Sky” seems much closer than is comfortable to think about, one often experiences one’s midlife crisis. Retirement Yenta has seen it time and time again. Co-workers and friends, who were once upstanding members of the work force or upstanding members of the community, suddenly change their thinking, drop everything they once held dear and buy a sports car/motorcycle/”younger model mate.” Now, your dear Yenta does not support the latter (you know, the younger model mate, unless said current mate has already retired to the sky), she does support, however, enjoying one’s midlife crisis. This little Yenta notes one thing about everyone in their midlife crisis: they are having fun. Who cares if you are 55 and look a fool to the neighborhood. It’s your life, have fun. Don’t deprive yourself. Retirement Yenta says this: When you are a “mid-yid,” don’t flip your lid. Have some fun instid!

Retirement Yenta spent the late 70′s in EST and the 90′s in the Forum. We all have stories…and we’re not talking Garrison Keillor. This Yenta is talking about that story that you keep repeating and it keeps you from being your best. Your dear Yenta wants you to pick a new story. This story should be about the you that you want to become. Follow the plot of this new you. Don’t let your past actions weigh you down. Retirement Yenta quotes En Vogue: “Free Your Miiiiiind and the Rest Will Follow.”
