Tip #134: Live for Today

Friday, April 23, 2010 @ 11:04 AM

Retirement Yenta knows there are only two true guarantees in life: 1. Taxes and 2. Death. We have two choices on taxes–pay ‘em or go to jail. This little Yenta dislikes the tax man, but she knows he cometh and tries to always be prepared with deduction after deduction. Now, as for the whole death thing…there’s nothing you can do but have a little fun while you are in the waiting room (aka: life). SO HAVE FUN ALREADY. Pick a vanity project and run with it, or go and do something that just makes you smile. Retirement Yenta would like to remind you of Tip #98: Share a Cab with a Stranger. This little pleasure made your dear Yenta smile for days and days. We all know that some day (hopefully long into the future) the grim reaper will arrive and to this your dear Yenta says: “Why wait to enjoy your life? You may retire to the sky before tomorrow!”

Tip #107: Put Your Party on a Diet

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 @ 01:02 PM

In light of her recent Super Bowl Party, Retirement Yenta has decided to dispense a little party throwing wisdom. Parties are fun. Food is good to eat. Too much fattening food at a party is NOT good for a Yenta’s svelte figure. So, this year Retirement Yenta decided to put her party on a diet. She had all the fixins you have grown to expect at a Super Bowl party…but this year, they were trimmed down to size. Her munchies were low salt and low fat. She served light beer and diet soda. Your dear Yenta even did a veggie tray sans dip. Do you know how many calories creep into your veggies in dip? Oy veh! It’s ridiculous. Retirement Yenta’s family and friends all seemed to have a great time, and no one even noticed that the party was on a diet. Retirement Yenta says: If the good times are flowing, no one will notice the diet is not blowing.

Tip #95: Get Physical

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 @ 01:01 PM

Retirement Yenta has found she enjoys getting physical. No, she’s not talking about Olivia Newton-John’s big hit from 1981 (though, she does like to get her “groove on” with that song). She is talking about getting physically fit. She thinks it is great to bring the gym to your own home. Buy a treadmill. Not only will it save you from the smell of hundreds of other’s sweat and dirty sox; it will also give you more motivation to work out. You will no longer have to drag yourself to the gym (and through the elements) to work out. It will be right there in your living room, awaiting your attention. Plus, you can watch your favorite “stories” while working out. Retirement Yenta says, “Get physically fit, and you will be a hit!” Just ask Olivia Newton-John!

Tip #90: Find a Diner & Become (a) Regular!

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 @ 11:01 AM

Your dear Yenta wants to encourage all of her readers to find and patronize a local diner.  Diners are the life blood of the gastro-economic machine, and having one that you love and frequent will provide you with great solace.  Where else are you going to get your lamb gyro and french fries at 2 AM?  After a particularly hard day, nothing puts a smile on this Yenta’s face like a large strawberry milkshake from Metro Diner on 100th and Broadway.  Oy – such a milk shake they make! Besides, as the Cheers theme song says: “Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.”

Tip #87: Join Facebook

Thursday, January 7, 2010 @ 01:01 PM

Retirement Yenta is a social butterfly. She loves to keep in touch and get caught up. She has found that the social media trend has swept her away. Your dear Yenta loves Facebook and Twitter, not to mention LinkedIn. She believes these sites are where it’s at. This Yenta has connected with friends from high school (in the wilds of CT), and found her former babysitter (NOOOOOO, not the babysitter of her children, but her own babysitter, who took care of her when she was a wee little Yenta). Once you try it, Retirement Yenta knows you will like it. All the cool Yentas do it…so should you.

Tip #79: Buy Big (and Yes, Size Matters)

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 @ 12:12 PM

One knows that as one ages, the eyes start to go. So, Retirement Yenta has decided to beat nature at it’s own game. She has gone and bought herself two big screen TV’s, one for her living room and one for the bedroom. Retirement Yenta especially loves having a big TV in the bedroom (for obvious reasons). Now, when mother nature tries to laugh at your dear Yenta for not being able to see the way she once could, the Yenta can laugh back saying she sees just fine (as long as it is on at least a 42″ screen). Your dear Yenta also says, “Size matters, so, buy big, and buy now!”

Tip #67: Convert Your VHS Tapes to DVDs

Monday, December 7, 2009 @ 04:12 PM

It’s hard to imagine that VHS tapes have gone the way of dinosaurs, but they have.  Not only do VHS tapes take up too much room on your shelves, but they also degrade over time and become unwatchable. Retirement Yenta recommends you spend the time and money now to have all your precious moments transferred over to a digital format.  DVDs are much easier to copy than VHS tapes and sharing your favorite moments will be that much easier.

Tip #25 Think About What You Eat

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 @ 11:10 AM

Let’s face it, you already can’t eat like you used to.  So… as you anticipate retirement, you MUST start logging what you eat.  By keeping a food diary, you will start to get a handle on what can “give.”  Start counting calories, or go to Livestrong for their calorie counter. Start watching the TV program, The Biggest Loser to inspire you. In fact, buy The Biggest Loser‘s calorie book.

Tip 13: Don’t Forget To Walk

Friday, September 25, 2009 @ 12:09 PM

When you were working, particularly if you worked in a city, you walked a hell of a lot.  In fact, you probably walked a lot more than you ever imagined.  Now that you’ll be retired and not walking as much, remember that you need to compensate for this.  Retirement Yenta recommends that you buy a treadmill, StairMaster, or NordicTrack, and place it right in front of your big flat screen TV.  If you have a patio you might want to look into putting the equipment and TV outside.
