Retirement Yenta is tired. She is tired of a lot of things. She is especially tired of tatty fabrics that are simply poorly made. Poly blends…cheap cashmeres…ratty rayon. Your dear Yenta remembers that back in the day, a great garment would last and last. Plus, you could patch it up and wear it longer. There was no need to dispose of a shirt after only one season…any shirt you purchased would be around for a good 10 years. OY. It’s the GAP culture out there in retail land. Clothes may look nice at the time of purchase, but after a few washes, they show their true colors…faded. Then a few more wears and they pill, or tear, or become a bit thread bare.
So, dearest Ones, RY wants you to repurpose your old fabrics. Patch ’em up. Mend ’em. Darn ’em. Wear them longer. Then, when you think they are looking beyond repair, consider new ways to cut ’em up and resew ’em. Those old PJs will make an amazing pillow or two. Imagine cuddling up under a creative cashmere scarf made from your favorite cashmere sweater! Your neck will be warm, and your heart will glow from being in the know of all the old memories coming along in tow.
